“Building a sense of community through movement!” – This is what Shenicka Banks intends to accomplish in her hometown, through a series of fitness events this month. Banks is a Whiteville native (WHS c/o ’07), and a proud member of the Whiteville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. After relocating to Greensboro, NC she became a member of MADDFitness Studio and quickly feel in love with the energy and the way that MixxedFit and Xtreme Hip Hop classes brought people together through movement and music. Now a certified instructor for both classes, Banks has been inspired to bring their energy and style of fitness back to her hometown.

What are MixxedFit and Xtreme Hip Hop?
MixxedFit is a dance fitness program that combines explosive dance movements with bodyweight toning. Xtreme Hip-Hop is a music-based fitness program made up of step aerobics, cardio, and strength combinations that build endurance and stamina. Through both programs you can expect a high-energy and welcoming atmosphere with a diverse mix of great music. “My classes focus on making fitness enjoyable while still delivering a great workout. More importantly, people can expect encouragement, community support, and an environment where everyone feels welcome regardless of their experience level,” says Banks.
Each class is designed for people of all fitness levels to feel comfortable showing up and participating. She states that, “Whether you are new to fitness, returning after some time away, or already active and just looking for something different, the goal is for participants to leave feeling energized, accomplished, and excited to keep moving.”

Why in Whiteville?
According to US News and World Report, Columbus County is consistently ranked among the lowest in the state for overall health, usually appearing the bottom 10%. In 2023 the county was ranked the worst in the state and it currently maintains a life expectancy roughly 6 years shorter than the state average. Banks believes that her efforts will play a role in addressing some of the county’s challenges with a comprehensive approach: “Communities thrive when people have opportunities to move, connect, and prioritize wellness. When we create local fitness spaces, we’re not just improving physical health, we’re also strengthening mental health, confidence, and community relationships.”
In presenting this event, Shenicka extends a special thanks to Mr. Skylar Baldwin of Southeastern Services & More, Inc. and Whiteville City Parks & Recreation for helping provide a safe and welcoming space for these classes.

Shenicka’s professional life extends beyond fitness, working as a full-time School Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate, supporting students and families while advocating for mental health and wellness. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys time with loved ones, traveling, line-dancing, riding her motorcycle and continuing to grow her business. In 2020 Banks founded SAGEipsum, a skincare business with locations in Chadbourn and Greensboro, NC. While juggling a full professional and social schedule, Shenicka states “I am also a proud Army wife and the pup mom of our rottweiler, Miss Bailey Banks.”
You can connect with Shenicka and stay up to date on classes and events through her website: sageispum.com. All individuals, organizations, churches and local groups are encouraged to reach out, to collaborate on wellness events. In the future, Banks says to expect more community fitness opportunities, “making fitness inclusive and accessible for all ages and experience levels.” The Whiteville native has a desire for more community-driven wellness initiatives, saying “Things like outdoor fitness events, community classes, youth engagement in fitness, and partnerships with local organizations can make a huge difference. When people see health as something that’s supported by their community, they are more likely to stay committed to it.”
Starting this weekend, be sure to join Mrs. Banks along with your neighbors for the March Fitness Takeover in Whiteville, NC.
